The Celtic traditional designs were used as long ago as the 4th century, when
Scotland was a predominantly Celtic nation. In those days, jewelry and ornamentation
were hand-crafted with intricate patterns of intertwining lines forming an almost
infinite number of knots. These knots symbolized the hope of eternal life and became
a talisman of longevity.
Luckenbooth brooches are so called because they were
sold from "locked booths" in the Royal Mile, adjacent to St. Giles Cathedral
Edinburgh, in the early 1700s, and they were traditionally exchanged between lovers
on betrothal. Subsequently pinned to the shawl of the first baby to protect it from
"evil spirits". Intertwining hearts are evidence of their purpose and a
surmounting crown symbolises Mary Queen of Scots. They are probably the most romantic
ans lovely type of brooch in Scotland's history.
The Thistle has been the
emblem of Scotland for some 700 years. Its intrinsic aesthetic quality and balance
are instantly recognizable, commanding universal appeal whether or not "...the
blood is strong" or "...the heart is Highland".

Heather Gems are made from the stems of the heather, a common Scottish plant renowned for purple bloom. The stems are dried, shotblasted to remove the bark and dyed various colors using natural dyes. Stems of different colors are then mixed together and compressed into a block - eighty tons of pressure is required to press the block of stems together. The block is then cut into slices and individual pieces are cut, shaped and filed by skilled craftworkers, before being lacquered to give the final finish. The pieces of jewelry are set into silver and pewter fittings. A number of these fittings use Celtic designs dating back to the time of St. Columba and the start of Christianity in Scotland. No two pieces of jewelry will be colored exactly alike. As the heather is sliced, each shows different patterns and colors.

Knotwork interlacing owe much of their perfection and beauty to the use of
mathematical formulae, and are peculiar to Pictish Art. The Highlanders' love of
ornamentation resulted in embellishing much of his wearing apparel with Silver
and Cairngorm stones.
The Kilt Pin became fashionable in the 1800s and has
continued in mode to this day, universally worn on all Kilts or Kilted skirts. Highlanders
often embellished the metal parts of their wearing apparel either by the use of precious
metal or Cairngorm stones, polished pebbles or jewels and this practice later extended
to Kilt pins.
The Four Mary's Brooch represents Mary Queen of Scots and her
four Ladies in Waiting, all called Mary!
The Claidhmohr meaning "big
sword" and pronounced "claymore" of Wallace and Bruce was the original
Highlanders' sword and was often of incredibly large and heavy proportions, requiring
the use of both hands. The Scottish Clansman was a magnificent swordsman who spared
no effort in finding the finest blades available.
